Work to begin on Town Centre roads

From Telford & Wrekin Council – 25 August 2011

Work to begin on Town Centre roads

Telford & Wrekin Council will shortly begin work to improve two key roads around Telford town centre.

Beginning on 5 September and lasting for approximately 3 weeks, work will start on improvements to Euston Way, the main access road to Telford Central rail station.

Further work will also begin on Hall Park Way, between the Malinsgate and Forge Roundabouts, on 7 September, again lasting for around 3 weeks.

Euston Way will see a number of improvements, including the widening of bends to make access easier, resurfacing the carriageway, construction of a new footpath, installation of new lighting and making provision for a new coach pick-up point at the station.

Free shuttle buses will operate between the station to the bus stop on Telford Way during the works as usual bus services will not have access to the station. Shuttle buses will operate approximately every ten minutes.

Cars and vehicles up to minibus size (including taxis) will still be able to access the station, however road closures will be in place and will change as work progresses. Drivers are advised to follow the diversion signs that will provide information on the correct route to follow.

The work to Hall Park Way will see the roundabout being resurfaced while at the same time the number of signs will be reduced, with those remaining being replaced by new signs.

During this time there will be some road closures and diversions in place.

Access will remain for traffic travelling from Malinsgate to Forge roundabouts (M54 Junction 5), but there will be no access to traffic wishing to travel in the opposite direction.

Access to the retail parks during this time will be closed from Hall Park Way, but the businesses will be open as normal and a diversion will be in place for access to the retail parks. Access to other businesses along Hall Park Way will still be open.

Drivers who usually exit or join the M54 motorway at junction 5 to access Telford town centre are being encouraged to use either junction 4 or 6 for the duration of the work.

Every diversion will be signposted, including those from alternative motorway junctions. Parking will be temporarily suspended along Hollinshead Way, between West Centre Way and Caledonian Way to make the diversion to the retails parks easier for vehicles to negotiate.

Cllr Hilda Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport & Community Protection, said: “Telford & Wrekin Council’s commitment to improving the borough’s road network continues.

“The work on Hall Park Way and Euston Way will significantly improve the surface of the roundabout, which is a maintenance priority for us.

“While closures will be in place where necessary we have tried to keep disruption to a minimum, by encouraging drivers to use alternative routes and providing shuttle buses at the station.”

Diversion signage will be in place for the start of the works and diversion routes will also be available on the Council’s website www.telford.gov.uk/highwayschemes
