Telford & Wrekin Council Press Release 8 August 2011
Dawley bowls in line for cash boost
Dawley is set to benefit from £50,000 towards bowling facilities after additional consultation has ensured that the money must be spent on the sport specifically within the Dawley Magna Ward or Great Dawley Parish.
The Council has secured the £50,000 from a developer as part of a planning obligation and the money will now be used to contribute towards bowling green facilities in Dawley.
This follows the renewal of an existing planning permission and section 106 agreement which was reconsidered by Members of Plans Board on the 3rd August following further consultation with Parish and Ward Members.
The previous application outlined the bowling facilities should be provided within Dawley Park.
However through consultation with Local Members, it has been agreed this geographical area should be widened to meet the needs and demands of the sport; however this is still ring fenced to be spent within the defined areas or Dawley Magna or Great Dawley.
This money is in addition to £50,000 already secured through another section 106 contribution from the Dunn Cow development, which will be used for community and school sports facilities at the new Dawley Sports & Learning Community.
Cllr Shaun Davies, Cabinet Member for Co-Operative Council and Partnerships said “This is fantastic news for the regeneration of Dawley. Money will be vital to ensuring people in Dawley continue to enjoy sports like bowls and that facilities that may have been gone because of one development, are replaced elsewhere.
“That we are able to retain this money for bowling green facilities in Dawley means we are providing our residents with local services that they may not have otherwise had.
“Initially new ward members were not consulted, due to the election period, so being able to consult further has being invaluable.
“Consulting with our local Parish Councils has allowed us to gain a thorough understanding of where the money is needed and we have been able to take these views on board and get the changes implemented.”
