Dawley Market set to return to High St

Press release from Telford and Wrekin  Published on 10 February 2011

Dawley’s market is to return to the town’s High Street, following the completion of the major regeneration of the area by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The Council, which runs the market, plans to work with existing market traders and also attract new traders to Dawley to help create a quality street market that would further boost the town’s regeneration, as well as returning the market to original location.

The market had had to move from the High St last year to make way for the Council’s major regeneration work in Dawley town centre.

The Council is now pursuing the necessary legal orders and working to attract new traders to ensure that the market can make a big splash when it re-launches in High St.

It hopes that the market could move back to the High St by May this year.

Cllr Eric Carter, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Housing and Prosperity said: “Markets have a long history in Telford and Wrekin and an absolutely vital part to play in supporting the regeneration of our borough towns.

“A healthy, vibrant and busy market provides a real lift to an area drawing in visitors and boosting business and this will add further value to the extensive regeneration work this Council has completed in the High St.

“We want to create a high quality market for Dawley that would really help more people to come and enjoy what Dawley has to offer.

Cllr Helen Williams, cabinet assistant with responsibility for Dawley’s regeneration, added: “An improved market on the High Street in the centre of Dawley will be a real feather in the town’s cap and for a place that already has a great community spirit, this can only add to this.

“We will be keeping the community in Dawley working with residents, market traders, local councillors and businesses to develop a solution that meets everyone’s needs and keep all informed on how this is progressing.

Telford & Wrekin Council manages and promotes markets in Dawley, Hadley, Madeley and Oakengates and sees it as a vital part of the Borough Towns Initiative to further regenerate these areas.

The Council’s aim is that all its local markets are high quality, professional, sustainable and attract people to local centres on market days, benefitting market traders and providing a boost for local shops and businesses too.  The Council is actively seeking new traders for both its traditional markets and its specialist markets, such as farmers’ and arts/crafts markets.”
